Runes, Rifts, Runecrafting: Runespan

Today at 8:00 PM UTC rifts to the new, and well awaited, Runespan appeared at, the Grand Exhcange, Catherby, and Ardrougne. The rifts closed after about 10 minutes. (Access to Runespan will not be available to players until later this week.) This was a major let down to players who were looking forward to the new Runecrafting training that is Runespan. Accompanying the rifts were Esslings, rat like creatures “made out of rune essence and are bound together with runic energy”. Hundreds flocked to the three rifts in hope of catching a glimpse of the openings into Runespan and the strange essling creatures, before they disappeared.
The Runecrafting update was noted in the BTS for April, and made more anticipated by Jagex with a countdown to “See the Future”. There was much speculation by players as to what the countdown was for. A new skill possibly? But as the month came closer to an end and with no Runespan update yet to arrive, as promised in the BTS, it became clear that this would be a look at the new Runespan. It is interesting to note that the “opening of the rifts” today was part of a hidden update form earlier this month, so there was no need for a “System Update” and servers offline.
Runespan is expected to surpass the ZMI altar for Runecrafting, while throwing a bit of magic experience into the mix. And with just about anything in RuneScape comes rewards. Wicked robes and a brand new pouch, that can store 18 essence, will be made available to Runespan users.
So be sure to check out Runespan later this week and get your runecrafting on as you help wizards contain the runic energy and explore Runespan.
